Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer—and when caught early, it’s highly treatable, with a 90% survival rate in the early stages. The good news is that regular screenings, including colonoscopies, can detect concerns before they progress, giving patients the best opportunity for timely treatment and positive outcomes.

At Mahaska Health, our expert Surgery Care Team is here to help you stay proactive with your health. Colonoscopies are performed as a routine part of preventive care and can identify pre-cancerous polyps before they become serious. Most patients begin with a simple screening and never need to see a cancer specialist. If additional care becomes necessary, our Oncology team provides expert, compassionate support. Surgical Oncologist Dr. Daniel Kollmorgen, Mahaska Health Oncology Medical Director, is one of only ten surgical oncologists in the state of Iowa.

Our comprehensive cancer care program brings together specialists in surgery, anesthesia, nursing, and care teams working together, dedicated to providing exceptional care. Mahaska Health is the first Iowa Critical Access Hospital to be awarded four designated Centers of Excellence including General Surgery and Surgical and Medical Oncology. Every day, our teams go the extra mile to create a comfortable and personalized experience for patients of all ages.

“From my first visit, through surgery, care was outstanding. My care before, during, and after my colonoscopy couldn’t have been any better.” Surgery Services Patient Testimonial

One in four colorectal cancer patients has a family history of the disease. If you have any risk factors—such as a family history—it’s important to talk to your provider about starting screenings earlier than age 45. Screenings also help prevent cancer by removing pre-cancerous growths (adenomas) before they have a chance to turn into cancer. Left undetected, 1 in 10 adenomas will develop into cancer within 10 years.

Colorectal cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in younger adults. Today, 30% of new cases are in people under 55. It is now the leading cause of cancer-related death in men and the second in women under 50. These facts highlight the importance of preventive screenings—no matter your age.

At Mahaska Health, we provide expert, patient-centered care. Always keep your provider informed of changes in your health history and stay up to date with recommended screenings. Mahaska Health Family Medicine and Specialty Care Teams provide expert prevention-focused care and screenings. Our teams have the experience, specialization, and state-of-the-art technology to provide the highest level of care.
