At Mahaska Health, our expert teams are here to care for you and your family throughout every stage of life. One of the most meaningful ways we do that is by focusing on prevention. April is National Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Month, dedicated to raising awareness about cancer risks, the importance of screenings, and the power of early detection.

Prevention is Peace of Mind

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in Iowa. The 2024 Cancer in Iowa report estimates that 20,800 new cancer cases and 6,100 cancer deaths will occur across the state this year. While these numbers are significant, there is hope. According to the American Cancer Society, up to 42% of newly diagnosed cancers in the United States may be avoidable through preventive care, screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices (ACS Cancer Facts & Figures 2024).

Protecting your skin, eating a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, staying active, and receiving recommended vaccines such as HPV can all lower your risk. Regular screenings are just as important, as early detection often means more treatment options and better outcomes.

However, many Iowans are behind on routine screenings. Only 69% of eligible adults are getting recommended colorectal screenings, and just 72% are receiving regular mammograms. This means many cancers that could be detected early, or even prevented, are going undiagnosed.

Experts You Can Count On

While many screenings provide reassurance and help you stay on track with your health goals, having access to expert care is important when questions or findings arise. Mahaska Health is the first critical access hospital in Iowa with four state-designated Centers of Excellence. Our oncology services are guided by experienced leaders and a collaborative approach to care. Dr. Daniel Kollmorgen, Medical Director of Oncology Services at Mahaska Health, leads the regional Cancer Tumor Board, bringing specialists together to review cases and coordinate personalized care plans for patients throughout southeast Iowa. Prevention and early diagnosis are powerful tools for better health outcomes. Whether you are scheduling a routine screening or following up with your provider, our Family Medicine and specialty care teams are here to support you every step of the way.

“I had questions about a symptom and since I have a family history of cancer, I truly appreciated getting an appointment with a family medicine provider so quickly! It was good to be listened to with respect and care.” Verified Patient Review
